What a great opportunity to meet up with friends and incorporate a social element to exercise and take it outdoors! Nothing like walking and encouraging each other to keep up pace whilst sharing stories and solving world problems. The distraction of lovely walking companions seems to pass the time so quickly and make the effort easier.
Sharon and I met with a couple of friends whom we went to school with over 40 years ago. We walked around Princes Park in Carlton with the sun out and blue skies albeit windy! A lovely precinct that passes around Melbourne University with green parklands, a little lake and sporting fields. The area was buzzing with children playing soccer, avid runners (some very obviously training for upcoming marathons), lots of dogs playing fetch, bike-riders, kite-flyers, families and picnics. Lovers strolling along and some very serious speed walkers. We lapped the park 3 times to accumulate just on 10km's combined with our 2.5km walk to and fro from Northcote we achieved our 15km target.
It was wonderful to catch up with Rosa and Phil (who had little ziggy almost pulling her to running speed) and get some "Laps (up) for Lachy" whilst training for our upcoming 21km walk in October raising valuable funds for Peter Mac's research for a cure for cancer. Both Rosa and Phil have joined our team - thank you lovely ladies! Love your energy and commitment to the walk. It was especially nice to see Guiliana whom we haven't seen since our VCE Graduation 40 years ago.
It was like time had stood still. Given the history we shared, during our school life, we just connected instantly. We may all look a little older, walk a little slower and have more baggage but the smiles, laughter, familiarity and love hasn't changed a bit.
It was load of fun! And healthy too! Exercise is such a feel good!
Sunday mornings weekly we are endeavouring to undertake new walks around suburbs of Melbourne. Looking to explore new tracks and parklands. Open to suggestions!
